Emotional Day For Chivas Owner Jorge Vergara As Stadium Finally Opens

Only the birth of his children surpassed the excitement Vergara felt Friday, he insisted.

Jorge Vergara was filled with emotion on Friday. As his club was en route to beating on the world's most storied clubs, Vergara was ecstatic over his past, present and future.

Vergara watched Javier Hernandez score a goal and play one half with Chivas and switch jerseys to play the second half with Manchester United and ultimately saw his club down the English giants 3-2 in the grand opening of Estadio Omnilife in Guadalajara.

For the opinionated entrepeneur, the night was a complete and utter success.

"The best part of my life is when my children were born but this is the second-best day of my life," Vergara told reporters in a press conference. "The most important thing is to demonstrate that we can get things done if we really want them."

The match served as both a high-profile inauguration as well as a send-off for Hernandez, who delighted the sold-out crowd of 45,000 every time he touched the ball. Hernandez did good on part of what Vergara said he told him.

"I told Chicharo to score three and he scored one, but it doesn't matter," Vergara said. "He was the first to score and it is historic. There is no better send-off for Chicharo than to have him score a goal in this game."

Thus, the first goal in Estadio Omnilife went to Hernandez, who played a quiet second half for Manchester United.

The stadium, though, is now officially open and will likely leave the longest impression on the locals. That it even exists could be a bit surreal to some, considering the number of setbacks the stadium had before it was ever a reality.

Vergara, though, said he was not at all surprised by the obstacles, and did not hesitate when asked if the stadium was worth the trouble.

"For me it was," he said. "I was never anxious. I knew we would be delayed two years and eight months and that's how late we were."
